La Villa Blanca - The White Town. Luarca

La ciudad de Luarca (Lluarca en asturiano), capital del concejo de Valdés, está situada en la Costa Occidental del Principado de Asturias. Se le conoce como la Villa Blanca de la Costa Verde.

The town of Luarca (Lluarca in asturian), the capital of the municipality of Valdés, is located on the West Coast of Asturias. It is known as the White Town of the Green Coast.

Bañada por el mar Cantábrico, entre acantilados escarpados, y dividida en dos por el río Negro, que atraviesan siete puentes, cuenta con un gran puerto, notables edificios, numerosos establecimientos comerciales y acogedoras playas.

Bathed by the Cantabrian Sea, between sheer cliffs, and bisected by the Black River, crossed by seven bridges, Luarca has a large port, notable buildings, numerous shops and cozy beaches.

Entre los monumentos de su casco antiguo destacan la ermita de la Atalaya, el Faro, el cementerio (donde descansa el premio Nóbel de Medicina de 1959, Severo Ochoa), el Palacio de los Marqueses de Ferrera, el edificio del Ayuntamiento, y numerosas casas de indianos.

Among the monuments of the old town we include the chapel of la Atalaya, the Lighthouse, the cemetery (where lies the Nobel laureate for Medicine in 1959, Severo Ochoa), the Palace of the Marquis de Ferrera, the City Hall, and numerous Indiano’s houses.

Su puerto se encuentra entre los más destacados del Principado, con una intensa actividad comercial y pesquera que conserva desde antaño. En uno de sus diques se ubica el Aula del Mar, de la Coordinadora para el Estudio y Protección de las Especies Marinas (CEPESMA), en la que se expone la mayor colección de calamares gigantes del mundo.

Its port is among the highlights of Asturias, with intense commercial and fishing activity that preserves from a long time. In one of its banks lies the Aula del Mar

, the Coordinator for the Study and Protection of Marine Species (CEPESMA), which presents the largest collection of giant squids in the world.

Alrededor de este puerto, cuya actividad principal fue originariamente la captura de ballenas, se fueron construyendo distintos barrios marineros de estrechas callejuelas y casas blancas que aún conservan su encanto y atractivo, y que podemos admirar recorriendo se paseo marítimo.

Around this port, whose main business was originally whaling, different neighborhoods were built by sailors with narrow streets and whitewashed houses that still retain their charm and attraction, and that we can admire tracing its promenade.

Un paseo donde encontraremos numerosos establecimientos de restauración donde poder degustar las capturas de los barcos recién atracados en el puerto.

A walk where you will find numerous eateries where you can taste the fresh catch of the boats moored in the harbour.



Cascadas de Oneta - Oneta waterfalls

La ruta de la cascada parte del centro del pueblo de Oneta, en la carretera AS-36 que enlaza la capital del concejo, Villayón, con Luarca. El camino arranca justo al lado de un puente, donde encontramos la señalización de la misma que nos dirige hacia el oeste.



The path to the waterfall starts from the village center of Oneta, in the road AS-36 that connects Villayón, the district capital, with Luarca. The trail starts just next to a bridge, where you will see signs of it heading west for.

La ruta, de 2 km. de longitud, se recorre fácilmente en una hora de camino, tiempo al que añadiremos el que pasemos admirando la cascada principal y su entorno. Es un camino muy fácil que se puede realizar con niños.

The route of 2 km. length, can easily be covered in an hour's walk, and we should add the time we'll spend admiring the main waterfall and its surroundings. It's a very easy way that can be done with children.

En Oneta cogeremos un camino ancho y llano que atraviesa el caserío para llegar hasta los campos labrados, dejando el río a la izquierda y el cementerio a la derecha. Llegaremos hasta una caseta que antiguamente servía como central hidroeléctrica del pueblo, y seguiremos por el sendero, que se va estrechando hasta que finalmente podremos divisar a lo lejos, entre la arboleda, la cascada de la Firbia, en la que el agua cae desde una altura de 38 metros.

In Oneta we will take a wide and flat road running through the village to reach the plowed fields, leaving the river on the left and the cemetery on the right. We arrive to a house that once served as the village hydroelectric, and continue down the path that narrows until finally we spotted in the distance, through the trees, the Firbia cascade, in which the water falls from a height of 38 meters.

La luz que atraviesa tímidamente la cubierta de los árboles (robles, abedules y castaños), el vapor de agua que se desprende de la cascada, y el sonido de las aguas que rompen estruendosamente contra las rocas conforman uno de los espectáculos naturales más imponentes y mágicos de Asturias.



Light passing timidly through the cover trees (oak, birch and chestnut), water vapor that emerges from the waterfall, and the sound of the water breaking against the rocks, make one of the most impressive and magic natural spectacles of Asturias.

En ella, el agua resbala sobre la pared densamente cubierta de musgos y helechos, para caer en un pozo en el que se acumulan los grandes bloques de piedra desprendidos de la pared rocosa.

In it, the water slides on the wall densely covered with mosses and ferns, to fall into a pit that accumulate large blocks of stone detached from the rock.

Proseguimos aquí la ruta hacia la segunda cascada, siguiendo el sendero que acompaña al río en su agradable descenso entre pozas y pequeños saltos de agua, y que se irá estrechando poco a poco hasta llegar a la segunda cascada. En el camino, atravesamos diversos molinos harineros abandonados, que podemos visitar, y que estaban abastecidos por un antiguo canal construido en la margen derecha del río. En uno de ellos, el Molín de Abaxo, se conserva todo el mecanismo.

We continue here the path to the second waterfall, following the way that accompanies the river's pleasant drop between pools and small waterfalls, and that will be gradually narrowed down to the second waterfall. On the way, we pass through several abandoned flour mills that we can visit, and that were supplied by an ancient canal built on the right bank of the river. In one of mills, the Abaxo Molín, the whole mechanism is conserved.

Finalmente llegaremos a la segunda cascada, que se denomina cascada de Ulloa, y en la que el agua resbala sobre la pared dando lugar a bellas formaciones musgosas. Y difícilmente podremos alcanzar la tercera de ellas, la Maseirúa, por su difícil acceso.

Finally we reach the second cascade, called Ulloa cascade, and wherein the water slides on the wall giving rise to interesting mossy formations. And we can hardly reach the third one, the Maseirúa cascade, with a difficult access.
